The intestine is an organ in our body that we have paid too little attention to for a long time. In recent years, however, there have been numerous new studies and findings that have made it clear that the human intestine, with all its tasks and functions, is one of the most important organs for us and that the condition of our intestine has a strong influence on our general well-being. The intestine is the area in our body where there is a maximum of other life. Millions of different microorganisms, bacteria and fungi live in our intestine and form the so-called microbiome, our intestinal flora. There are more microorganisms living in our intestine than our body has cells, which is a clear sign of how important and influential the intestine and its inhabitants are for us. These microorganisms are responsible, among other things, for the fact that we can utilize food in the first place, that certain nutrients that are vital to us are produced or that pathogens are fought off, for example. We now know that 80% of our entire immune system is located in the intestine and that even certain happiness hormones are produced in the intestine. After the brain and spinal cord, the intestine also has the most nerve cells in our body and is directly connected to our brain via the so-called vagus nerve, i.e. the gut-brain axis. Due to its diverse tasks and its enormous influence on the rest of our body, the intestine is now also referred to as the second brain. The health of our intestine is therefore essential for our general health and well-being. An imbalance in our intestine can not only promote the development of numerous diseases such as allergies, skin diseases, diabetes, depression, Parkinson's or cancer, but can also directly affect our mental and emotional state. Unhealthy diet, certain medications such as antibiotics, environmental toxins such as pesticides or even psychological stress can throw our intestinal health out of balance and thus damage our entire system. By leading a holistically healthy lifestyle and above all by eating a healthy and proper diet, we can ensure the health of our intestines and thus our general well-being.
